New charges for Northern Gateway road

3:45 pm on 1 July 2011

The New Zealand Transport Agency is to start charging people for the cost of processing certain types of payments for the Northern Gateway Toll Road.

The 7.5km motorway extension north of Auckland begins just before Orewa and ends after the Johnstone Hills near Puhoi.

The agency will start charging for phone and kiosk payments in a bid to cut administration costs.

From July, the base price for each trip will stay the same at $2 for light vehicles and $4 for heavy vehicles.

People who pay by phone will be charged $3.70 per phone payment and 40 cents per kiosk payment.

The charge will apply to the transaction, not the number of trips, but will not apply to people who pre-pay their accounts or pay online.
