A survey has found Takapuna and Petone are the worst suburbs for commuters in the Auckland and Wellington regions during peak traffic in the morning.

The survey, conducted by a navigational company, timed the routes of commuters using its GPS system from their suburb to the city centres.

The worst commute to central Wellington was from the Lower Hutt suburb of Petone - with the travel time almost doubling to about 26 minutes in peak traffic.

In Auckland, the early commute from Takapuna to the city centre almost tripled - from about 10 minutes normally to 28 minutes.

The company timed commuters' routes over a nine month period, between 7am and 9am and 4pm and 6pm.
