Heavy rain closes Gisborne school, roads

5:35 pm on 5 July 2011

Heavy rain has closed a school and roads in Gisborne on Tuesday.

The Gisborne District Council says toilets at Gisborne Girls' High School are backing up after rainwater overloaded the wastewater system.

The council says wastewater systems are also overflowing at other points around the city and there is also surface flooding in Harper, Wheatstone and Cameron roads, and at Ruatoria.

Some problems cannot be fixed until the rain stops, it says.

A large slip has closed Waingake Road in the hills south-west of Gisborne and some inland roads on the East Coast are also impassable.

The rain is expected to tail off on Tuesday night.
