Voluntary student membership threatens radio station

3:29 pm on 6 July 2011

The future of Radio One, a student station at Otago University, is under threat as the Students Association considers selling it if mandatory membership ends.

An ACT Party member's bill before Parliament would make membership of tertiary student associations voluntary.

The Otago University Students Association says this would put its future funding in jeopardy.

The association says a recent student survey found that Radio One is seen as being one of the lesser valued services it provides, which is why it is considering selling it.

Despite this, station manager Sean Norling says Radio One provides a valuable service and he is disappointed with the proposal.

He says he has presented the association with a number of scenarios to keep the station going.
