The number of people on benefits has fallen with nearly 800 fewer people on unemployment benefits since May.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says 94% of the reduction on the unemployment benefit is of young people.

There are now 56,264 people on an unemployment benefit, down from 68,369 in January last year.

There were 327,817 people on all benefits in June.

Unemployment rates in Canterbury have risen 17.8% since the February earthquake.

At present, 6342 people are receiving unemployment benefits in Canterbury - 962 more than the week before the quake.

However, Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says overall, benefit numbers in the region are down by 670.
