Fire at palm kernel warehouse out

3:25 pm on 8 July 2011

Fire-fighters have put out a blaze at a storage facility for palm kernel husks in Mount Maunganui.

Ten fire crews were sent to the J SWAP factory on the corner of Hull Road and Totara Street at 12.4am on Friday.

The fire took about three hours to bring under control and its cause is being investigated.

Totara Street remains closed between Triton Avenue and Rata Street, and Hull Road is closed between Portside Drive and Totara Street.

Tauranga City Council advises people to stay out of the water in Pilot Bay for the next 24 hours because of potential contamination from the water run-off.

Palm kernel is a dairy feed supplement. It is a by-product of the palm oil industry and is used if hay or silage is not available during drought conditions.
