6:19 am on 11 July 2011

One person has died and two others are seriously injured after a car crashed into a St John vehicle near Taumarunui.

The paramedic car was travelling in convoy behind a St John Ambulance that was carrying two victims of an earlier accident.

Police say the driver of the other car died at the scene.

The passenger and the woman ambulance officer driving the St John car were taken to Waikato Hospital where both were in a serious but stable condition.

Police say the ambulance crew were not harmed, and their patients are now in Taumarunui Hospital.

State Highway 41 was closed after the crash late Sunday afternoon and will not be reopened until at least 11pm on Sunday.
