Stock up for winter, civil defence urges

7:59 am on 11 July 2011

Civil Defence in Canterbury is warning people to stock up on essential items as wintry weather sets in.

It says preparations are needed in case there are power cuts or road closures which could isolate communities.

The manager of the Canterbury regional emergency management office, Jon Mitchell, says people may be on their own for three days or more.

He says stocks of food, water, fuel and batteries for torches and radios are essential.
