Transit New Zealand has closed the Waihenga Bridge on State Highway 53 to and from Martinborough.
The closure follows heavy rain in the Tararua Range, which has caused rising water levels in the Ruamahanga River.
The road was closed at 6pm on Monday and will remain shut until water levels recede.
