Electronic waste deluge predicted

6:13 am on 13 July 2011

An electronic waste trust estimates 2.2 million televisions and 1.5 million home computers, each containing toxic cathode ray tubes, will be dumped in the next few years.

The eDay New Zealand Trust is urging the Government to introduce new regulations requiring such waste to be recycled.

Trust chairman Laurence Zwimpfer says the country faces a disposal deluge with the switch to digital television which begins next year.

He says the demand for electronics needs to be managed so toxic waste does not end up in landfills.

The Trust is urging the Government to establish regulations ensuring suppliers and importers of electronic goods contribute to recycling costs.
