Dominion Road traffic plans scaled back

Auckland Council has scaled down its plans for a $100 million upgrade to one of the city's busiest roads.

More than 25,000 vehicles travel along Dominion Road each day and last year the council proposed 24-hour bus lanes connecting to the central city, and the removal of on-road parking.

More than 6000 people campaigned against those changes, saying the bus lanes would have made the area noisier and removing on-road parking would have affected local businesses.

The council has now agreed to add more bus routes around the shopping areas of Balmoral and Mount Roskill, and introduce cycle lanes where room is available.

It also says it will work with locals to reduce traffic congestion on Dominion Road.
