Power company switching hits record high

The number of people switching power companies hit an all time high last month following the launch of a Government-funded awareness campaign.

The Electricity Authority says almost 44,000 people switched power providers in June, a jump of 33% on the previous month.

The authority says the increase is due to its What's My Number campaign encouraging consumers to use an online calculator to find which power company will give them the best deal.

It says many people are deserting larger power companies in favour of smaller operators.

However, the biggest winner was Genesis Energy, gaining 2929 customers, while 7679 left Contact Energy.

Consumer New Zealand chief executive Sue Chetwin hopes the campaign will bring down power prices but says it is more likely it will only slow inevitable rises.
