Invasion of privacy seen in sampling of records

The Airline Pilots Association says the Civil Aviation Authority's method of randomly sampling the criminal records of pilots was an invasion of privacy.

The High Court in Wellington has ruled the sampling, which was done under a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Justice, was unlawful and cannot continue.

However, the judge made it clear that the ruling does not mean the CAA is prohibited from obtaining access to pilots' criminal record information.
