Concern over ban on interviewing accused

8:02 am on 14 July 2011

The New Zealand Broadcasting School says a judge has gone too far in threatening to ban recording inside court if journalists continue to try to interview the accused outside it.

Justice Venning has issued a note to journalists warning them against speaking to former Bridgecorp director and fraud-accused Rod Petricevic, outside court.

Mr Petricevic is one of five former Bridgecorp directors facing charges in relation to the collapse of the finance company, which owed investors $450 million.

NZ Broadcasting School tutor Paul Norris says it would not be appropriate for a judge to stop recordings in court.

But defence barrister Greg King says the note is fair and appropriate. He says the judge should be commended.
