A Kaitaia woman has been jailed for more than eight years for the manslaughter of her daughter in August 2009.

At a trial in Whangarei in May, Norefjell Davis was acquitted of murdering two-year-old Jacqui Peterson-Davis, but convicted of her manslaughter and wilful ill-treatment.

The child died in Auckland's Starship Hospital in August 2009 from head and chest injuries after her mother kicked her numerous times.

Doctors also said the toddler had a number of older injuries from previous assaults.

At the High Court in Auckland on Thursday, Justice Peter Woodhouse sentenced Davis to eight years and six months' imprisonment, with a minimum non-parole period of four years and three months.

Davis' other two children are being cared for by family.

Defence lawyer Belinda Sellers says there will be no appeal against the conviction or sentence.

But Ms Sellers says Davis still maintains that the fatal injuries were caused by the child's father.

She says the pair were in a violent relationship at the time and both were addicted to methampetamine.
