The Government is to launch an inquiry into the use of foreign chartered vessels in New Zealand waters.
It follows a petition put to Parliament in February this year calling for an inquiry into the fishing industry.
Fisheries Minister Phil Heatley says the Government wants to ensure the rules surrounding the use of these vessels is adequate.
Mr Heatley says New Zealand has a good reputation for managing fisheries, so it wants to assess areas including working conditions and safety standards.
New Zealand fisheries often lease overseas vessels and crew because its cheaper, he says.
An initial report from the inquiry is expected to be released next year.
