Tainui complaint 'lodged out of spite'

A spokesperson for the head of the Waikato Tainui parliament says a police complaint against Tania Martin was lodged out of spite.

The complaint was initiated by Robin Whanga and supported by the chairperson of Te Arataura (the tribal executive), Tukoroirangi Morgan.

Police have dismissed claims Mrs Martin was involved in mismanagement of funds in the 1990s.

A spokesperson for Mrs Martin, Chris Webster, says the allegations were extremely petty and were sparked by a report by Mrs Martin which criticised overspending by the executive.

She says Mrs Martin plans to file a complaint against Mr Morgan and Mr Whanga for making false accusations.

Robin Whanga rejects the assertion his complaint was filed out of spite and doesn't regret asking the police to investigate.

Mr Whanga said his complaint was in response to a comment made by Mrs Martin that Te Arataura should be held accountable for overspending. He says the matter is now over for him.
