A post-mortem has confirmed the man killed by officers in Taranaki on Saturday died as a result of a single shot to the head, police say.

Anthony Ratahi, 46, was shot after an armed stand off with police in the the town of Opunake.

He had held his former girlfriend hostage for 12 hours before he was shot. Police said he was armed with a knife and a gun.

They say it is now up to the coroner to decide when his body will be released to his family.

Mr Ratahi had been out of prison for just over a week for an earlier attack on the same woman.

Police meanwhile have wrapped up their scene examination at the hotel.

They say the building has now been handed back to its owners and exhibits taken from the scene will be examined.

Superintendent Russell Gibson says an investigation is likely to take some months.
