The ambulance service says it was called to an assault at the same Auckland home where the police are investigating the sudden death of a 72-year-old man.
A St John spokesperson says staff were called to a property in the suburb of St Heliers at about 2.30pm on Thursday.
They say the elderly man was dead when they arrived.
Police have started a scene examination, which will continue on Friday.
They say the Coroner has been notified.
A post mortem will be carried out on Friday morning.
The police will not give any further details.
