Auckland SPCA is offering half price dogs in a bid to find homes for 161 dogs filling its kennels.
Donor fatigue following the Christchurch earthquake and a tough economic climate are blamed for the low number of dogs being adopted.
Marketing manager Martin Mackenzie says the SPCA does not usually hold special sales for dogs and puppies to avoid people buying them just because they're cheap.
He says about 60 dogs and 20 puppies are ready for new homes, out of a total of 161 dogs in the pound.
An adoption drive is being held on Saturday and Sunday.
