Ministry unlikely to fund meningococcal C vaccine

The Ministry of Health is unlikely to fund a Meningococcal C vaccination, as requested by the family of a medical student who died from the disease.

Auckland District Health Board and the family of Zachary Gravatt, 24, have told a coroner they want the ministry to consider publicly funding a vaccine.

However, the ministry says that would probably happen only if there was an epidemic.

It says that's because the disease is relatively rare and the vaccine is estimated to last only about five years.
