Man on trial for murder of woman

1:40 pm on 25 July 2011

The High Court has been told a Wellington woman found dead in her flat suffered injuries to her head in a frenzied attack.

John Haerewa is before the High Court in Wellington charged with murdering Alison McPhee a year ago.

Ms McPhee's body was found lying in the entranceway of her flat by a friend on 28 July last year.

She and John Haerewa had been in a relationship and he was at her flat on 22 July, the evening on which the police say she was killed.

Crown Prosecutor Michael Snape told the jury she tried to call 111 on the night she died, but the phone disconnected.

A short time later neighbours heard banging noises and shouts coming from her flat.

Mr Snape said the accused's fingerprints were found in Ms McPhee's blood on a chair leg.

The trial is set down for three weeks and the Crown will call more than 50 witnesses.
