Auckland lines company Vector says the recent bout of cold weather sparked a record demand for power across the city.

A spokesperson says the polar blast caused power usage to go up by 24% on Monday evening to 1810 megawatts.

She says that's an increase of 256 megawatts on the previous Monday, which is the equivalent of the daily power demand of about 85,000 households.

Last year's peak was 1701 megawatts, also in July.
