A Te Awamutu police officer has been seriously assaulted during an attempted arrest.
Detective Sergeant Ross Patterson says the officer responded to reports of suspicious activity on Rewi Street, shortly after midnight on Wednesday.
Police say the officer found a man breaking into a car. After the attack the person fled the scene.
Detective Sergeant Patterson says the officer was treated in hospital and is recovering at home.
