Cycle trail expansion route to be opened

3:49 pm on 28 July 2011

The first of several back-road routes to be added to the New Zealand Cycle Trail will be launched in August.

The Ministry of Economic Development is planning to add the routes to the 18 predominantly off-road trails being built.

The additional rides will be on quiet roads that require only minor improvement.

The first is on State Highway 43, known as the forgotten highway, which runs through King Country and Taranaki.

It will be opened in Taumarunui on 20 August.

The ministry is yet to indicate what other back routes it will add to the trail, but says it's talking with several councils.
