Plantation fire brought under control

A large vegetation fire on conservation land in Canterbury has been brought under control.

Crews from as far afield as Rolleston were called to the Waimakariri Gorge plantation, near the township of Sheffield, just after 6pm on Wednesday.

The Fire Service says the fire front was initially about 100 metres wide, fanned by gusty winds across about 50 hectares.

Department of Conservation deputy principal rural fire officer Tony Teeling says bulldozers and a digger were used overnight on Wednesday to contain the fire.

Several ground crews were to return to the scene on Thursday.
