Auckland police say it could be days before they decide if they will charge a 15-year-old boy who is accused of stabbing an intruder in his home.

A 19-year-old man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening stab wounds to his torso after the incident in Henderson on Thursday.

The police say the 15-year-old and his father were woken by noises on their property in the early hours of the morning and found an intruder in the garage.

They say the stabbing happened after a scuffle.

A spokesperson says a thorough investigation is underway but officers are yet to speak to the injured man.
