3D rugby plan abandoned

The International Rugby Board has abandoned plans to broadcast some of the Rugby World Cup games, including the final, in 3D.

IRB subsidiary Rugby World Cup Ltd says the decision was made reluctantly.

It said the company involved, 3D Live, could not meet its production commitments.

Rugby World Cup Ltd said it has explored every option to try to make 3D production viable, but with so little time left, it was agreed that cancelling the 3D programme was appropriate.

However it said high definition television will be used for all games including the round robin matches.

In May, Rugby World Cup Ltd said the final stages of the tournament would be shot in 3D and shown in cinemas and outdoor arenas.
