UNICEF seeks more donations to famine appeal

5:04 pm on 31 July 2011

UNICEF is praising New Zealand for contributing $NZ270,000 to a famine appeal for the Horn of Africa.

More than 12 million people there are affected by the worst drought in 60 years.

More than two million people have fled Somalia for neighbouring countries.

UNICEF says the response in the first two weeks of the appeal was tremendous, given that many people have already donated to Christchurch this year.

NZ executive director Dennis McKinlay says the response is equivalent to the amount of money given after disasters in Haiti and Pakistan last year. But he says more money is needed.
