Taxis now required to have cameras in place

8:14 am on 1 August 2011

The Transport Agency will be checking this week to make sure taxi companies are complying with new rules designed to improve safety.

It is now mandatory for taxis in 16 towns and cities to have a working security camera system and an alarm capable of notifying their base in an emergency.

The Taxi Federation says about 95% of operators already comply, and most of the rest have exemptions to have cameras installed in the next few weeks.

Christchurch companies are exempt until May.
