Accommodation close to being sold out during rugby event

4:50 pm on 1 August 2011

Hotel and motel rooms in Auckland during the Rugby World Cup are close to being sold out.

Fans will soon be left with only last-minute options.

Everything from luxury houses to an uninsulated room in a garage in Pakuranga, is on offer.

The House of Travel thinks hotel and motel beds will sell out for the final at Labour Weekend in October. Many central city hotels are already full.

However, many homes are still available on private accommodation websites.

But 80minute.com owner Sue Robinson says people should try to book through reputable sites or risk the house they arrive at, not living up to expectations.

She says tourists should go through a site that has the approval of the cup organisers or Tourism New Zealand.

As for the homes asking $15,000 or more for a week's accommodation, she says most will have to be more realistic.

The Rugby World Cup begins on 9 September.
