More than 130 Christchurch polytech tutors walked off the job on Monday after pay negotiations broke down.
The Tertiary Education Union says the tutors are seeking a 5% pay rise this year and 3% in 2012.
The union says the polytech has offered fulltime tutors a 4% rise this year and 2% next year.
Part-time tutors are being offered a 2% increase this year and next.
The union is also criticising the polytech for trying to increase tutors' teaching time by 60 hours a year and reduce their leave from the current nine weeks.
However, the polytech says it needs more flexibility from staff. It wants the option of buying up to three weeks of a tutor's leave for 2% of their salary per week purchased.
The tutors will resume work on Tuesday.
