Parents urged to protect children against measles

9:14 pm on 1 August 2011

Health authorities are urging parents to ensure children are immunised against measles as cases continue to rise.

Auckland now has 94 confirmed cases of measles and Waikato has 10.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service says 18 extra cases confirmed this week are largely associated with the Ranui Baptist Church in Waitakere and several of its families which each had unimmunised children.

The service says it has been battling to contain the disease for more than two months and some schools are likely to require children not immunised to stay home now the new term has begun.

The Health Ministry says the vast majority of of children in Auckland who have caught measles were not immunised against a disease which is serious and much more infectious than the flu.

It says measles is likely to continue to spread, and parents should get their children vaccinated.

Waikato health authorities say they are waiting to hear about a further five cases.

The district health board says most cases so far are linked to Te Awamutu College.

It says is expecting more cases because of the 10 to 12-day incubation period before those infected realise they are unwell.
