July weather was average

NIWA says statistics show the weather for July turned out to be average for that time of the year.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research says July started out unusually warm in eastern areas of both islands, but a polar blast a week ago pulled down average temperatures for the month to typical levels for July.

The figures show rainfall was well above normal for the west and south of the South Island, as well as for Whanganui to Waiouru.

The east of the South Island was unusually sunny.

However, low pressures off the South Island gave Canterbury the second strongest and most persistent westerly wind since 1941.
