Morgan dumped from Te Kauhanganui

9:50 am on 7 August 2011

Tukoroirangi Morgan has been dumped from the Waikato Tainui Tribal Parliament, Te Kauhanganui.

Representatives from more than 60 marae met on Saturday at Hopuhopu, near Ngaruawahia, to vote on whether to disqualify Mr Morgan from being a member of the parliament.

Exact voting numbers are still to be confirmed this week, but more than half of those at the meeting voted to disqualify him.

Mr Morgan was the committee chair of Te Arataura, which manages tribal assets, but the vote means he cannot continue in that role.

Radio New Zealand understands Mr Morgan plans to fight the decision through the courts.

Te Kauhanganui's chairwoman, Tania Martin, released a report last year alleging excessive spending by the executive board, of more than $1.3 million.
