Police have named two young women who died in a road accident on Saturday near the Manawatu town of Feilding.

They are Holly Ann Eades, 17, from Feilding, and Jackie Maree Miller, 18, from Sanson.

Holly was the driver and Jackie was the front seat passenger of a Ford Laser which lost control on a bend of Stewart Road as they travelled towards Feilding.

It collided head on with a Range Rover whose driver and sole occupant, a 54-year-old man from Palmerston North, was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Police say the cause of the crash is under investigation, but alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.

The crash follows a spate of deaths in Feilding in the past year or so including the killing of farmer Scott Guy, a mid-air collision which claimed two lives, a series of arsons and an apparent murder-suicide in Feilding.

Manawatu Mayor Ian McKelvie says the crash caps a tough time for the town.

He says the crash occurred on a corner he would not anticipate problems with, and where he cannot recall accidents happening before.
