New eating disorder service to open

10:34 am on 7 August 2011

A new eating disorder service will open in Auckland on Monday.

The Recovery Solutions Group Trust will launch Flourish, the first private service for adolescents experiencing an eating disorder.

The trust began a similar service through the public health system late last year. Before that, the most critical cases had to travel to Australia for treatment.

Flourish will treat teenagers who have a normal body weight, but whose unhealthy relationship with food has raised concerns with parents.

Psychiatrist Darryl Prince says the need for a preventative service is huge, as an estimated 60,000 people per year are likely to have an eating disorder in New Zealand.
