Council agencies to be more open

8:18 am on 8 August 2011

Major council-controlled organisations in Auckland are being forced to be more open with public information.

Auckland Council has sent new rules to the agencies responsible for transport, events and other activities, requiring them to publish monthly reports on their websites two days prior to meetings.

The Automobile Association has publicly complained that Auckland Transport had been keeping public information too close to its chest, since being created nine months ago.

Mayor Len Brown says some of the seven agencies are run by top business people who had been unfamiliar with the need for public oversight.

The transparency rules now match those applied to most local body committees.
