MFAT warning for New Zealanders in Britain

4:11 am on 10 August 2011

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade has issued a warning to New Zealanders in London and other parts of Britain affected by riots.

Disturbances, including looting, have spread to the cities of Birmingham and Liverpool as Britain's worst unrest in decades escalated in a third night of violence on Monday.

The violence started in Tottenham, in north London, on Saturday when a peaceful protest over a police shooting of a suspect turned violent.

MFAT is asking New Zealanders to avoid areas where there is unrest and to follow instructions from local authorities.
