A police officer had her jaw broken while trying to intervene in a domestic violence incident in Taupo early on Saturday.

Three officers were called to a Taupo property just before 4am following reports of a man assaulting a woman in front of an eight-year-old child.

The Taupo Area Commander, Inspector Steve Bullock, says one officer was kicked in the face by the woman, who was trying to stop police arresting the man.

Mr Bullock says the officer needed medical treatment but she was expected to be discharged from hospital later on Saturday.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Inspector Steve Bullock says it will determine the circumstances leading up to the incident and whether any improvements to police process can be gained as a result.
