Injuries in the home costly

3:37 pm on 15 August 2011

Injuries in the home cost New Zealand $272 million last year. Some 261,000 people were hurt as a result of slips, trips and falls.

The Accident Compensation Corporation says more than 3000 people were off work for more than three months as a result of falls in the home.

And almost 10,000 people were off work for more than a week.

ACC says people tend to think it is only the elderly and small children who fall over.

But the statistics show there were more than 107,000 claims for falls in the home by 25 to 64-year-olds.

The most accident-prone households were in Northland which recorded 5660 injuries.

The most common place to take a tumble was in the garden, followed by the bathroom.
