The Auckland Council has agreed to continue investigating whether it will back a cycleway and walking path on the Harbour Bridge.
The Pathway Working Group says the pathway will cost just over $30 million but could be funded through sponsorship, tolls or a public- private partnership.
Construction would take roughly a year and the path could be operating by 2014 if the project gets underway in the coming months, it says.
The council has agreed to do further investigations to determine whether it is financially viable and whether it wants any role in the project.
The Transport Agency, which owns the bridge, says it's highly unlikely that it would agree to fund the project or allow it to go ahead without further investigation.
