An Auckland man is in a critical condition in Wellington Hospital with head injuries following an incident in the central city.
Police says the 50-year-old was involved in an altercation with a man he knew at an inner-city hotel about 3.30am on Sunday.
The man has undergone surgery.
A 35-year-old man was to appear in Wellington District Court charged with assault.
Police inquiries are continuing.
