Motorists in Wellington are advised by Civil Defence to think twice before driving to work on Tuesday morning, especially around the hill suburbs.

Civil Defence says it has had reports of motorists crashing due to the icy conditions.

Controller Mike Mendonca says black ice is likely to be forming on the roads due to zero-degree temperatures.

He says commuters should avoid driving, particularly in the suburbs of Karori, Brooklyn, Khandallah and Broadmeadows.

He also warns pedestrians to take care while walking on steep paths.
