Auckland scores only record temperature

7:01 pm on 16 August 2011

NIWA's chief climate scientist James Renwick says Auckland is the only place in the country to have a record all-time low in the course of the current polar blast.

Temperatures in the city plunged to 8.1C on Monday, beating the previous record of 8.7C recorded at Auckland airport in July 1996.

Wellington had its second coldest day since records began at Wellington Airport in 1959 with a maximum of 6.8C, slightly warmer than the record of 6.5C.

In the South Island, Mr Renwick told Checkpont night time temperatures have fallen to very low levels, with minimums between -10C and -15C, but he says the New Zealand record for minimum temperatures is around -21C.
