Another brush with death for Pike River survivor

2:00 pm on 17 August 2011

One of the two men who survived the Pike River coal mine disaster last November has escaped death for a second time - this time in Australia.

Daniel Rockhouse, 24, lost his younger brother when 29 men died on 19 November.

Mr Rockhouse was working 1km down in the North Goonyella coal mine near Mackay in Queensland when he was almost crushed by a cave-in this week.

''It was making some funny noises and cracking and I got out of there,'' he said.

Mr Rockhouse told Morning Report he is yet to decide whether to go back to work or give up mining for good. His wife has had enough of the ''heartache'', but he loves doing it.

''I've got nine lives,'' he said. ''I've probably used three or four of them with Pike and probably another couple this time. Yeah, lucky.''

Peabody Energy, which owns the Queensland mine, says 90 workers were in the area at the time of the incident, but no-one was injured.
