Snow still expected for hill areas

10:24 pm on 18 August 2011

MetService says snow showers are easing throughout the country, although snow is expected for the hills and ranges between Gisborne and Canterbury on Thursday.

A high in the Tasman sea is edging slowly towards New Zealand and will lift the snow level, but some higher roads could still be affected.

MetService says the chance of black ice on roads is more likely as skies clear and motorists should be particularly careful.

Many highways throughout the country reopened on Thursday, including the alpine roads Arthur's and Porters Pass.

However, the Desert Road on State Highway 1 in the central North Island shut again on Thursday night due to ice.

Motorists are warned to take extra care when using all highways.

The Bluebridge passenger ferry service for Thursday morning was cancelled due to rough conditions in Cook Strait. Passengers services will resume with the scheduled lunchtime crossing. Freight services were not affected.
