Hundreds of submissions on council merger

A contentious plan to merge Nelson City Council with Tasman District has attracted a flurry of late submissions.

The Local Government Commission has recommended the union and says about 380 submissions have been received, with about a third of them arriving on closing day, Friday.

Tasman District Council continues to oppose the merger saying it would be a backward step for the district and be of no financial advantage to ratepayers.

Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio believes support for the scheme is rising, including from Tasman residents.

Submission hearings will be held next month.
