With 17 days to go before the start of the Rugby World Cup, organisers still have about 200,000 tickets to sell to make their targets.

World Cup Minister Murray McCully and event officials issued the latest figures on Tuesday, as they try to keep to the $39 million loss that they are planning for.

Rugby World Cup 2011 chief operating officer Therese Walsh says at the moment sales are running at about $1 million every three days.

Matches where all the tickets are sold include France against New Zealand, and South Africa against Samoa.

Ms Walsh says New Zealanders are very much late buyers and predicts more matches will sell out as interest continues to pick up.

Mr McCully describes the ticket sales as precisely on track.
