Police Assn comment on findings of motorway inquest

The Police Association says the most pleasing finding of the Coroner's report on the accidental shooting of a teenager is that the officers involved were justified in their actions.

Halatau Naitoko, 17, was caught in police crossfire on the north western motorway in Auckland in 2009.

Coroner Gordon Matenga says his death was accidental. But he questioned the experience of police marksmen and says it is very worrying that they missed the offender from relatively close-range.

Police Association president Greg O'Connor says in theory all officers should be perfect marksmen, but training takes place in theoretical situations.

He says the officers involved will now be extremely experienced, but unfortunately in gaining that experience Halatau Naitoko tragically died.
